Mr. J’ai- Before digital releases, many independent artists burned their music on CDs to sell and promote themselves. There were lots of hand to hand transactions. The grassroots promotion was very relevant. CDs, stickers, and flyers were all a part of an artist formally introducing themselves to new listeners. Each of us shared our stories on the grind and struggle of this era (“The 99 and 2000s”). I will say L’Daialogue was famous on the streets and underground of New Orleans for his mixtape series entitled Ovaground Underground. He was burning and releasing every month his entire time in college. Hopefully, this song educates the younger generation of independent artists. The coolest part is all three of us have been connected and involved in each other’s careers through battles, concerts, natural disasters, and life. Those CDs are like collector’s items.

L’Daialogue- This song hits home because just thinking about those times brings back real feelings. I remember having to burn CDs and sell them hand to hand. I also remember at first, us writing our info on our releases with a Sharpie pen was kinda frowned upon. I remember one dude telling me it kinda implied that if I didn’t spend this crazy money on these intricately colored CDs, that no one would listen to my music. Turns out, it was the direct opposite. Folks rocked with my music MORE because of the underground aesthetic that those CDs represented. Also, I need to find the OG discs and drop some super limited edition reissues.
